Pressure Vessel Geometry, Hydrostatics & AWS Weld Symbols

Circumference, mean diameter, plate stretchout, and welding blueprint symbols

Boilermakers build, erect, and repair high-pressure boilers, nuclear reactors, heat exchangers, distillation towers, and storage tanks. The Boilermaker aptitude exam tests vessel geometry, mean diameter stretchouts, hydrostatic test pressures, and AWS welding symbols.

On the Test

Boilermaker apprenticeship aptitude test. Covers circle geometry, cylinder volume, plate thickness stretchouts, weld symbols, and confined space safety.

  • โ€ขMean Diameter Rule: Mean Diameter (Dm) = Outside Diameter - Plate Thickness (or Inside Diameter + Plate Thickness).
  • โ€ขPlate Stretchout Length: Stretchout = pi * Mean Diameter (pi * Dm).
  • โ€ขCylinder Volume: Volume = pi * r^2 * Height.
  • โ€ขHydrostatic Test Pressure: ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requires testing vessels at 1.3 to 1.5 times the Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP).
  • โ€ขAWS Weld Symbols: Fillet weld (triangle), Groove weld (square, V, bevel, U), Weld all around (circle at arrow joint).
  • โš Common trap: Calculating plate stretchout using the outside diameter (OD) or inside diameter (ID). Heavy steel plate compresses on the inside and stretches on the outside when rolled into a cylinder. The true neutral axis is the Mean Diameter (Dm). Using OD makes the rolled plate too long; using ID makes it too short.

Mean Diameter & Plate Roll Stretchout Math

When rolling flat steel plate into a cylindrical pressure vessel shell, the neutral axis of the metal neither stretches nor compresses.
Formula: Mean Diameter = Inside Diameter + Plate Thickness = Outside Diameter - Plate Thickness.
Stretchout = pi * Mean Diameter.
Example: Fabricating a pressure vessel shell with an Inside Diameter of 60 inches from 1-inch thick steel plate. Mean Diameter = 60 + 1.0 = 61.0 inches. Plate stretchout length = 3.1416 * 61.0 = 191.64 inches. Cutting to 191-5/8" ensures the rolled cylinder meets exact 60" ID specifications.

Hydrostatic Testing and Pressure Containment

High-pressure steam boilers operate at hundreds of psi and thousands of degrees. To verify structural integrity, newly fabricated vessels undergo hydrostatic pressure tests with water (never air or gas, which compress and can cause catastrophic explosive failure).
Test Pressure: ASME Section VIII typically mandates testing at 1.3 times the vessel design pressure. For a vessel rated at 400 psi MAWP: Hydrostatic Test Pressure = 400 * 1.3 = 520 psi.

AWS Standard Welding Symbols on Blueprints

Boilermakers must interpret American Welding Society (AWS) blueprint symbols accurately:
Fillet Weld: Indicated by a right-triangle on the reference line.
V-Groove Weld: Indicated by a "V" shape representing beveled plate edges.
Arrow Side vs Other Side: Symbols below the reference line apply to the arrow side; symbols above the reference line apply to the other side.
Weld-All-Around: A small circle at the intersection of the arrow and reference line denotes welding continuous around the entire joint.

Key Takeaways

  • โœ“Plate Stretchout = pi * Mean Diameter (ID + thickness).
  • โœ“Never test pressure vessels with air; water is incompressible and safe for hydro-testing.
  • โœ“A triangle symbol on a welding print denotes a Fillet weld.

Key Terms

MAWP

Maximum Allowable Working Pressure certified under the ASME Boiler Code.

Mean Diameter

The diameter measured at the centerline of plate thickness; neutral axis for rolling.

Hydrostatic Test

Pressure test filling a vessel with water to check for leaks and joint deformation.

Confined Space

An enclosed vessel with limited entry/exit not intended for continuous occupancy.
